MUZIEKTIP VAN DE MAAND: JOSÉ JAMES – ON & ON



Af en toe, heel af en toe hebben wij een ambivalent album als muziektip van de maand. Beluistering van On & On van José James zal de nodige voor- en tegenstanders opleveren.


Op On & On neemt James het repertoire van Erykah Badu onder handen. De plaat laat horen dat James en Badu heel erg dicht bij elkaar liggen, maar dat er ook veel verschil tussen de aanpak van beide vocalisten is. Beide zijn gezegend met een warme, licht rauwe stem en een kalme manier van zingen. Badu bijt zich echter iets steviger vast in haar nummers die steevast worden vergezeld door een ferme til op de rimshot, terwijl James het meer in laidback sferen zoekt met een stemmige pianobegeleiding.


Hiphopfanaten zullen waarschijnlijk eerder voor Badu gaan, terwijl de jazzliefhebbers voor James zullen kiezen. James introduceert Ebban Dorsey en Diana Dzhabbar, twee zeer getalenteerde, jonge saxofoontalenten op dit album, waar we ongetwijfeld meer van gaan horen.
